Mike Ballew & Bruce Godfrey Superintendent Mike Ballew presented Principal Bruce Godfrey with a banner from the Governor's Office of Student Achievement. Ballew announced that JMS has earned the silver award from the Governor's Office of Student Achievement for making great gains in student achievement. PCMS Sixth Grade Math Team PCMS Principal Chris LeMieux recognized the sixth grade math team and faculty sponsor Mrs. Carrie Stephens. The team finished first place at the Fall 2008 Berry College Math tournament. PCMS student Victoria Haughwout placed 3rd individually out of 60 students.

Food Service
All Pickens County Schools and Pickens County Headstart/Pre-K received perfect scores on their cafeteria health inspections. Supervisor of Operations Lloyd Shaddix, School Nutritionist Melinda Edwards, and the Pickens County Board of Education presented all the school managers and their staff with certificates of appreciation at the November Board Meeting. QAR Team
Pickens County Schools was recently visited by the Advance-Ed Quality Assurance Review Team. QAR Chair Dr. Dickens did report that the QAR team would be recommending to Advance-Ed SACS/CASI that the Pickens County School System be granted full District Accreditation. This would be done at Advance-Ed’s next meeting. This means that all Pickens County Schools and the School District are fully accredited. MAY 19, 2008 - Pickens County School Bus Drivers compete in Bus “Road-e-o”

School Bus Drivers from the Pickens County School System competed in a regional School Bus “Road-e-o” on Thursday, May 8, 2008. The event was held at the Dawson County Rock Creek Sports Complex. Other school systems from Lumpkin, Dawson, and White County also participated. The competition allows drivers to demonstrate the driving skills that they utilize every day. The drivers of the Pickens County Schools Transportation Department cover 62 routes, safely transporting our children 2,514 miles on a daily basis to and from school.

Pictured are this years’ team of drivers who competed in the event, which is sponsored by the Georgia Association of Pupil transportation. Winner Michael Colley will represent Pickens County in the State Competition to be held art the Georgia Public Safety training Center in early June.

Jasper Middle School Principal Bruce Godfrey recognized the FFA members that competed in the State Agriscience Fair in Macon and had three state winning projects; Jesslyn Chastain in Environmental Science, Timothy Crenshaw and Kayla Collis in Zoology, and Austin Davis and Austin Carver in Agriculture mechanics. JMS FFA was also recognized as a Gold emblem chapter for the second year in a row and is in the running for National Middle School Chapter of the year. Todd Dobson is the chapter sponsor Agriculture teacher at JMS.

Shannon Gable recognized FFA Club Sponsors Joe Wright and Jason Cantrell and recognized FFA members that competed in state competitions in City Perry, Georgia. The Livestock Judging Team included Junior Chapman (High Individual Area 1), Thomas Turcotte, Andy Bishop, Ali Pettigrew, and Lance Chapman. In Poultry Judging Lance Chapman placed first in state junior division, and Andy Bishop place third in the senior division. In Extemporaneous Speaking Ali Pettigrew placed third in state and first in Job Interview Area 1, Junior Chapman State FFA President, and Tyler Weaver placed first Creed Speaker Area 1.

Superintendent Mike Ballew and Chairman Trammell recognized the 2008 retirees and presented them with a plaque. Retirees included Sylvia Cagle, Geneva Parker, Dorinda Hillhouse, Johnette Watson, June Gilbert, Kitty Baldwin, Sherri Ballew, Linda Hunter, and Dan Gabriel.

Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams and Career and Technology Director Shannon Gable recognized Career Technical Instructor Connie Cagle and the students she took to state competition at Jekyll Island. In Early Childhood Education Mindy Pruitt was given an outstanding performance medal. In Occupation Creative Thinking the following students were given outstanding performance medals Angelica Jones, Steven West, and Stephanie Mitchell. In Professional Foods Alexander Johnson placed third in state. In Clinical Skills Casey Ray placed first in state.

Jasper Middle School Principal Bruce Godfrey and Jasper Elementary School Principal Nonnie Weeks presented a certificate to Ali Lawson. Ali drew a picture which was chosen by the American Printing House for the Blind to be placed in a 2008 calendar for the blind.

Harmony Elementary School Principal Sherry Mullins recognized the HES Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team which took second place out of fourteen elementary schools and she presented all of them with certificates.
Mullins also announced that the HES Math Team won 8th in the nation in the Math Facts competition. Kyle Waters was recognized for placing 3rd in the Math Facts division competition and placing 4th place nationally.

JMS FFA Middle School Chapter received the following honors: 2006-2007 Middle School Chapter of the Year 2nd year, 2006-2007 State Gold Emblem Chapter, 2006-2007 National Three Star Chapter Award winner, runner up to National Middle School Chapter of the Year. Mr. Todd Dobson is the JMS FFA Chapter teacher and sponsor. JMS student Courtney Chapman won the Northwest District FFA Junior Floral Design this fall. She will go on to compete at the state competition later this year.

Certificates presented from the Georgia Department of Education to Special Education Director Christine Barker. The awards were for students who met or exceeded state achievements for math, reading/english language arts, for reducing the amount of students who drop out of school, for graduates with a regular education diploma, and educating children in the least restrictive environment.
